I’m Sam—short for Samantha—wife, mom, and long-time “amateur” home baker who finally decided to stop putting air quotes around the word baker and just own it.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been the one in the family who brings dessert. I’m happiest in a messy kitchen, covered in flour, testing “just one more tweak” to a cookie recipe while the laundry silently multiplies in the next room. My life might feel a little chaotic at times, but the cookies? The cakes? The fresh-from-scratch loaf of bread rising on the counter? Absolutely to die for.
Semi-Sane Sweets was born out of two big pieces of my life colliding: my passion for baking and my journey with mental health. I’m a survivor of some pretty heavy mental health struggles, and baking has been one of my safest, most grounding outlets. When everything feels like it’s falling apart, there’s something steady about creaming butter and sugar, folding in chocolate chips, and pulling a warm tray of cookies out of the oven. It’s my reminder that even on the messy days, we can still create something beautiful (and delicious).
For years, friends and family told me, “You should charge for this.” So here I am, finally going all in on the bakery dream. But this space is about more than just selling cookies.
Here, I share the recipes I’ve tested (and retested), along with the baking science behind them—because I don’t just want you to follow a recipe, I want you to understand it. Whether you’re trying to figure out why your cookies spread, how to get that thick bakery-style texture, or just want something reliable that actually works, you’ll find it here.
And if you’re anything like me and have ever thought, “Could I actually turn this into something more?”—I’ll be sharing that too. From the messy beginnings of a cottage food bakery to the real behind-the-scenes of building something from home, this space is here to help you take that next step when you’re ready.
Semi-Sane Sweets is for the perfectly imperfect people: the ones juggling kids, work, emotions, and a to-do list that never ends, but who still want to make something sweet and meaningful. Around here, we celebrate small wins, slightly crooked cookies, and the kind of bakes that make you pause and think, “Okay… maybe I am doing something right.”
So welcome in. Try a recipe, learn the why behind it, dream a little bigger if you want to—and remember, you don’t have to have it all together to bake something amazing.
